| Physical Description |
Nicolas, or Nico as he more commonly goes by, stands at a height of 5’8” and weighs approximately 150 lbs. He keeps his black hair short in the back but slightly longer on top so he can either leave it disheveled, slicked back, or spiked. He has a naturally dark tan complexion and dark brown eyes due to his heritage. He can usually be found clean-shaven or having some sort of facial hair (goatee, slight beard, etc). Nico’s fashion sense can best be described as trendy and casual. Rarely will he ever be found wearing a t-shirt alone without some sort of jacket or a buttoned shirt over it. He prefers loose-fitting jeans to tight ones and loves to wear hats. Though Nico participated in wrestling and boxing in high school, he does not sport an overly muscular physique. He can be described as being toned with defined musculature. Unique Features: A birthmark that almost looks like a cloud on his upper left arm. |
| Personality |
To say that Nico is “foot-loose and fancy free” would probably be most accurate description of this young man, but say that to his face and you’ll no doubt find yourself on the receiving end of a well-placed punch. Nico is, in so many words, a laid back individual who prefers to live on the lighter side of life. He hardly takes anything seriously and will most likely be the one to crack a joke during a serious conversation. A trickster to the end, Nico is the type of guy who would pull a prank on you in the middle of the night before a big exam. He doesn’t do this to be malicious, and those who know him fairly well understand that; rather, he does it to lighten the overall mood and to get his friends to relax and enjoy life a little. But Nico’s personality is not as one-dimensional as that. He is an individual who takes his close friendships very seriously, and he is not one to give his full trust completely. But once you have it you can be sure that you have it for life. He has his moments of seriousness and sincerity but those are few and far between. If you happen to bear witness to one of those moments consider yourself lucky because he doesn’t share them with everyone. Nico also has a tendency to keep his anger inside and retorting with a joke or ignoring a person (or a situation) completely until he is able to release this energy, usually in the form of a few rounds with a punching bag. Nico is also a huge flirt choosing to set his sights on many women at once instead of focusing on just one. He has often been called a “player” in that sense, to which he replies “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.” He has never had a serious girlfriend before, his longest relationship lasting only four months before he found himself interested in someone else. |
| Personal History |
Maribel Vega was the only child of Miguel and Isabel Vega, a humble couple that lived in Puerto Barrios, a small port town in Guatemala. They owned a small business that rented out boats to tourists for river tours along the Rio Dulce. Not that they ever got a lot of business but they always made enough to support them and their daughter. Maribel was a happy child whose greatest love was to swim in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Little did she know the deeper reason for her love, or the reason that she could so often create water out of seemingly thin air. Maribel was seven the first time her mother caught her using her abilities. Isabel was upset at first, scolding the child viciously and locking her in her room without dinner for that night. But when morning came Isabel entered Maribel’s room with a tear stained face and a story to tell her daughter. It was then that Maribel learned that her mother was a water mage, but that she was originally an elemental brought forth by an alchemist in Guatemala City. She was released from her creator only moments before his death, and that act caused Isabel to become mortal, and thus a water mage. His final gift to her was her freedom and that was something that Isabel would never forget. But a part of Isabel rejected her true nature. While she knew that she was a mere creation she didn’t want to live her life that way; instead, she chose to never use her powers in the hopes of having a normal life. That was when she met Miguel and fell in love for the first time. Isabel had hoped that her powers would not pass onto her child so that she would not have to bear the burden of secrecy and always having to hide her preternatural ability. Seeing Maribel create water that day had broken Isabel’s version of reality and forced her to come to terms with her gifts. From that day on Isabel trained her daughter to use and control her powers and the two women became closer than ever. Miguel, having never known of Isabel’s powers until that time, became cold and bitter. He ignored both his wife and daughter, calling them spawn of the Devil, and resorted to drinking every night in order to push them from his mind. Their home life had fallen apart and their business was in shambles. It was everything that Isabel had feared would happen if her powers were ever discovered. Isabel fell into a deep depression afterwards and stopped using her powers altogether, leaving Maribel to train on her own. Maribel never stopped training with her powers and learned to not only produce water, but to also control it as she pleased. Even though her mother and father hated the praeternatural, Maribel could not abandon them. She got a job at a local bar when she was sixteen serving drinks to raunchy men who would have rather touched her ass than go home to their wives. It was disgusting but Maribel did what she had to in order to survive. She used the money she made to support her family, though there were times when her father would beat her and take her money to buy more booze. Isabel slowly deteriorated over time until the point where she eventually stopped eating. It broke Maribel’s heart to see her parents in such dire straights but there was nothing more that she could do. Maribel left home eventually and moved into a one-room apartment above the bar where she worked. She was only eighteen at the time but already she had gone through so much in her life. Maribel continued to work as a waitress and often found comfort in the arms of the men she served. It was the only thing that provided her a release from the shambles of her reality. That is until she met Jorge. Jorge was everything Maribel ever wanted in a man despite not fitting the mold of tall, dark and handsome. Jorge made her feel like she was special, and he wasn’t married or old like the other patrons in the bar. But the best thing about him was that he wasn’t repulsed by her when she used her powers in front of him. In fact, it only drew him in more and he showed her his own powers of summoning the rain. .Mari was thrilled to have found someone like herself and began to spend all of her time with Jorge and before long she ended up sleeping with him. Jorge told Mari that he was an Alux, the Mayan name for a sprite. After a few blissful months into their relationship, Jorge left Mari in the middle of the night without another word. Mari was devastated as she was left with only memories and, though she didn’t know it at the time, a child. After a month of misery and what seemed to be constant food poisoning Maribel found out that she was pregnant. Distraught and alone, she impulsively left her room and job behind and relocated to Guatemala City. She didn’t know why she wanted to go there, but it felt like the safest place for her at the time. Mari found a job bussing tables at a family owned restaurant. Though she was pregnant and the job could be hazardous to her health and the health of the child she took it anyway. Luck seemed to be on her side this time because while she was working she met Ricardo “Richard” Fernandez, a recent college graduate who was moving to the States to teach the Spanish language to American college students. Ricardo was immediately smitten with Maribel and though the young girl always had her mind on Jorge, she agreed to go out with Richard. Her initial reluctance subsided quickly and she found that Richard, though the complete opposite of Jorge, was stable and successful, and most of all he was willing to take care of her unborn child though it was not his. Maribel and Richard married two months after their first date and immediately moved to Crescent City, California. Nicolas was born five months later at Sutter Coast Hospital, a bouncing baby boy with dark hair and eyes. Richard loved Nicolas as if he were his own flesh-and-blood and was often found doting on the child when he thought no one was looking. Mari couldn’t have been happier with her new life and she suddenly realized what it was her mother was searching for when she hid her power from those around her. She wanted a sense of normalcy and for once Mari wanted it as well. She never used her powers though she had told Ricardo about them. He understood her want to be secretive, but he didn’t think it was necessary as long as she could control it. He hoped that her heritage would be something that their son could be proud of since it made him unique. Richard, unlike most men, grew up believing in the supernatural. His own grandmother was a shaman who was often called upon to perform various supernatural ceremonies. Richard always believed that there were things in this world that were beyond comprehension and explanation, but that did not make them bad. As a child he often wished that he had some sort of ‘gift’ that would set him apart from other people. So when Mari told him of her gifts, he readily believed her and hoped that their child would have the same preternatural gifts; but what Mari hoped for, as Isabel had hoped long ago, was for Nicolas to not manifest any of her supernatural gifts. But considering the supernatural lineage of his father Nicolas couldn’t help but possess powers, and they did manifest themselves quite early on. While the child did not produce water out of thin air, Mari found that every time she took him out to the park that it would suddenly start raining even when the forecast had predicted nothing but sunshine. Even their house was not free from a child with preternatural gifts as they often found a dark rain cloud perched right above their roofs. It was comical to Richard and he often called Nico his “happy little Eeyore” and joked that he would never have to water the lawn because of Nico’s gifts. Richard always thought that this was part of Mari’s abilities, but the water elemental knew better. She knew he had gained the gifts from his biological father, Jorge. Nicolas was only five when his mother began training him to control his emotions which were a big factor to his powers. Mari was diligent with Nico and trained with him every day until rain clouds no longer appeared wherever they went. Though Nico was so young he was determined to do well if only for his mother, whom he worshipped more than anything since she had powers like he had. Nicolas started primary school at Crescent City Junior Academy, a private school with a small population. Mari thought it was best if Nico had limited exposure to other students, at least for those first few years. That same year, Mari became pregnant with the couples first child and nine months later, when Nico was entering second grade, she gave birth to Marcus. The years passed with little incident and Nico went from adorable child to rambunctious teenager. He still trained with his mother on how to control his power enough so that he would never have to use it, but the idea was dull and boring to him. Nicolas began to experiment with his power, learning that not only could he control rain but also produce mist and fog. He kept it a secret from his mother and pretended to be ignorant to everything else. Nico stayed at Crescent City Junior Academy until the tenth grade and then transferred to Del Norte High School. His mother reminded him constantly about the use of his powers and to keep his gifts a secret. That no one could be trusted with such knowledge. Besides, the family had a reputation to uphold and no one would ever trust a college professor if his son was some sort of circus freak. He hated his mother’s words but went along with it. He did all of the ‘normal’ things he was expected to do, and when his father set up a family dinner with a colleague of his, Nico was on his best behavior. It was during this dinner that Nico met (and became friends with) Zechariah Kitano. Both young men went to the same high school and soon their friendship included hanging out on Friday nights and having camping trips over the weekend. Of course, the weather was always spectacular whenever they went – no rain would ever spoil their time out in the forest. But Nico’s secret kept him from getting much closer than that. By the time graduation came and passed, Zach had gone off to some private college and Nico didn’t even get an address to keep in touch with. It was for the best, he imagined, since he’d be going off to college soon, too. The thought of letting their son so far out of their sight was terrifying to Mari, though Richard thought it would be a chance for his son to spread his wings. But Mari felt that Nico was an impulsive young man and without proper guidance he would use his power like a party trick and reveal his secret to everyone. Nico went to this school and found that Zach was attending there as well. Nico didn't exactly rub people at the school the right way, but he had Zach and had made friends with his roommate, Loki, who was also a fellow prankster. It was all he needed really and the rest of them could be damned for all he cared. But his time at the school was cut short when a letter arrived from Zach's grandmother urging not only Zach, but Nico to come home as well. Loki, not wanting to be left behind, left with Zach and Nico and headed toward California. The friends weren't there for very long when tragedy struck Zach's family. Jared, Zach's older brother, had been one of the first victims of the Pandora Virus. A short time afterwards, Adrienne's mother died from the virus creating a more somber atmosphere for Nico and his close friends. It wasn't until they were approached by Theora, an elven priestess and one of their former teachers, that a ray of hope shined upon them. She told them about Elysium, a safe haven for humans and praeternaturals alike. Nico agreed to go immediately while his parents and brother decided to go to one in South America. |
